According to MSNBC, Finnish doctor Pekka Kannus recently completed a comprehensive study of a new a hip shield reported to reduce the risk of hip breaks.

His study, which included nearly 2,000 people between the ages of 75 and 87, found that the KPH2 protectors did in fact help to prevent people from breaking their hips. Thirteen of 653 patients wearing hip protectors broke their hips, compared to 67 of 1,148 patients who did not wear hip protectors.

The problem, according to Dr. Kannus, is that many people refuse to continually wear the hip shields. Of the 13 patients in the study that broke their hips after being assigned a hip shield, nine were not wearing them at the time of the incident.

Kannus suggested that hip shields were analogous to bicycle helmets. While people were aware of them at first, they became increasingly accustomed to them as time progressed.

Hip shields currently on the market come in a variety of "flavors." Some have thick pads, others not. Some have hard plastic shields, while others have none. Some have just plastic shields, and no pad. Some pads are made of foam, some of rubber, some of gel, and some of water and cornstarch.

Hip shields need not be noticed. Many can be sewn into elasticized garments, fit into pockets, or tucked behind belts.
